Group Calls for Protests Around Birthday of Jailed Burmese Democracy Leader

A U.S.-based group campaigning for democracy in Burma is calling for global action to protest the house arrest of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi around her 60th birthday in June.

An official with the U.S. Campaign for Burma said Wednesday the group is calling for global demonstrations and civil disobedience at Burmese embassies.

The official also urged global leaders to demand the UN Security Council immediately address the situation in Burma.

Aung San Suu Kyi will turn 60 on June 19th. She has been under house arrest since she was arrested in May 2003 after a clash between her supporters and a pro-government group in northern Burma.
