Thai Lawmakers Discuss Bill Objecting to Burma's ASEAN Chairmanship

Thai lawmakers are discussing an emergency motion that would object to Burma serving as chairman of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

The chairman of the Thai senate's foreign relations committee, Kraisak Choonhavan, told reporters Burma's human rights record is one objection to Burma taking its turn at the chairmanship.

The United States and European Union have protested Burma chairing the organization, citing its slow progress at democratic reform and continued imprisonment of democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

But ASEAN nations traditionally do not interfere with other members' internal affairs, which has made the issue difficult to address.
