Canada Slams Human Rights Record in Burma

Canada's House of Commons has released a report condemning Burma's human rights record and calling for more stringent economic measures against Rangoon.

The Foreign Affairs and International Trade Committee report calls on the Canadian government to more forcefully condemn what the committee says is "the repeated and systematic human rights violations committed by the military junta" in Burma.

The report also says Ottawa must urge Burmese officials to "immediately and unconditionally" release all political prisoners, including Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, who is under house arrest.

The committee urges Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's government to pressure the international community to force Burma's military government to negotiate a peaceful transition to democracy, as demanded by U.N. resolutions.
