Polls Open in France for Critical EU Vote

Polls are open throughout France as citizens there vote in a referendum that could decide the ultimate fate of the European Union's proposed constitution.

Nearly 42 million French citizens are eligible to vote on one simple ballot question: which is "Do you approve the proposed law authorizing the ratification of the treaty establishing a Constitution for Europe?"

The latest opinion polls indicate France could be the first country to reject the treaty. Although nine nations have ratified the pact, all 25 EU members must sign on for it to take effect.

Supporters say the treaty will increase France's voting voice in the European bloc and in Europe's role in world affairs.

Opponents say it will weaken France's sovereignty and result in free market economic reforms that harm French workers.
