White House: Koran Mishandling at Guantanamo Bay are Isolated Cases

The White House says the cases of American forces in Guantanamo Bay mishandling the Koran are isolated incidents.

A spokesman says the U.S. military adheres to the highest standards when it comes to respecting and protecting religious freedom and expects these standards to be met.

Friday, Pentagon authorities acknowledged that guards or interrogators in the facility in Cuba mishandled the Koran. The incidents included guards throwing water-filled balloons that wet some copies of the Muslim holy book.

Officials say one contract interrogator apologized to a detainee for stepping on a Koran and was later terminated for reasons including having a pattern of unacceptable behavior.

In March, a guard urinated near an outside air vent, and a fan blew urine onto a detainee and his Koran. U.S. officials say the guard admitted his mistake and was immediately removed from his post.

Officials say there is no credible evidence that American forces flushed a Koran down the toilet -- as Newsweek magazine alleged in a report last month. That report sparked deadly riots in Afghanistan and protests in a number of other countries. Newsweek later retracted the story.
