Burma Receives Multi-Million Dollar Grant to Fight Malaria

Burma says it has received nine million dollars from an international fund to help control the spread of malaria in that country.

Burma's National Malaria Control Program will use the money to fund a range of initiatives until March 2007, including expanded treatment and training courses for health care workers and volunteers.

Officials hope to cut the number of malaria cases in half by 2010.

About 700,000 Burmese are treated each year for the mosquito borne disease, and 2,000 die from malaria each year.

The money is coming from the Geneva-based Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It is part of a 35 million dollar package for Burma that will also be used fight the spread of HIV and tuberculosis.
