At Least 88 Dead in Bomb Blasts at Egyptian Resort

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak says a wave of bombings today-Saturday that killed at least 88 people in a popular Red Sea resort town have only increased his determination to battle and defeat terrorists.

His comment comes hours after at least three nearly-simultaneous explosions tore through the lobby of a luxury hotel-the Ghazala Gardens, a parking lot and a market in Sharm el-Sheikh, just after one a.m. local time Saturday. At least two of the explosions are believed to be car bombs.

Officials say most of the dead are Egyptians, but at least eight foreigners have been confirmed killed. More than 100 people were injured, many of them seriously.

Egypt's interior minister Habib al-Adli said there is some information linking the blasts with the October bombings in the Sinai resort town of Taba that killed 34 people.

An Internet claim of responsibility from a group calling itself the Abdullah Azzam Brigades of al-Qaida in the Levant and Egypt could not be immediately verified.

Information for this report is provided by AFP and Reuters.
