Burma Fires Three Ministers In Cabinet Shake-Up

Burma's state-run media say the military government has dismissed three ministers in a cabinet shake-up.

State-run newspapers said today-Thursday Education Minister Than Aung was sacked Wednesday and replaced by Chan Nyein, previously a deputy minister at the ministry of science and technology.

The media reports said two other officials, Than Shwe, who has the same name as the military junta's senior minister and Brigadier General Pyi Sone, both from the prime minister's office, were "permitted to retire," a euphemism for dismissing officials that is not as strong as being "terminated from duty" - the phrase used for Than Aung.

No reason was given for the ousters.

In addition, a newcomer to politics, Colonel Thurein Zaw was named deputy minister at the ministry of national planning and economic development. It is the fourth cabinet reshuffle in less than a year.

Information for this report is provided by AP and AFP.
