US Freezes Assets of Thai Firms Linked to Burmese Drug Trade

The United States has frozen the assets of several individuals and companies it says are linked to drug trafficking in Burma.

In a statement issued today-Thursday, the U.S. Treasury Department named 11 people and 16 companies based in Thailand with alleged links to a Burmese heroin producing group operating out of the notorious Golden Triangle.

The Treasury Department said the drug producers, known as the United Wa State Army-UWSA and its senior commander Wei Hsueh-kang, are already on a list of designated significant foreign narcotics traffickers.

The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control said the action freezing their assets ensures that the drug traffickers can not use the U.S. financial system to move or hide their opium proceeds.
