Thailand and Burma have opened a new "friendship bridge" across the Sai River that divides the two neighbors.
Thai Foreign Minister Kantathi Suphamongkol and his Burmese counterpart, Nyan Win, presided over the opening ceremony Sunday at the crossing, which links Thailand's northern province of Chiang Rai with the town of Tachilek in Burma.
The new 90-meter bridge also gives Thailand an improved road link to China.
An earlier border bridge across the river opened in 1967, but could not accommodate increased traffic between the two countries.
The bridge opens as southeast Asian nations are putting increased pressure on Burma to make good on promises of democratic reform.
