Saddam Trial Adjourned for Two Weeks

The trial of deposed Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein has been adjourned for two weeks, following another session of heated outbursts from the defendants.

Saddam shouted "God is great" and "Long live the mujahedeen" today-Tuesday in court. He also announced that he and other co-defendants were on a hunger strike to protest their treatment.

Saddam's former intelligence chief, co-defendant Barzan Ibrahim, appeared in court for the second day in his long underwear. He entered the court chanting "Long live Iraq."

Witnesses told the court they did not have information about the case, and said they were being forced to testify.

Saddam and the others are on trial for the killing of more than 140 Shi'ite Muslim villagers after an assassination attempt against Saddam in 1982.

Meanwhile, U.S. officials say an Iraqi Army major and his son were killed when they were fired on in Al Taji, north of Baghdad.

Information for this report is provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
