Burma to Restore Diplomatic Ties with North Korea

Anonymous diplomatic sources have told the Reuters and the AFP news services that Burma has agreed to restore diplomatic ties with North Korea.

Burma broke off diplomatic relations with North Korea in 1983, after North Korean agents set off a bomb in Rangoon that killed 17 visiting South Korean officials, including four cabinet ministers.

International sanctions have isolated both regimes because of their human rights records.

Analysts told AFP that restored relations could benefit both countries: Pyongyang could become one of Burma's few suppliers of weapons, and energy-poor North Korea could make use of Burma's natural gas reserves.
