Burmese Police Chief Says Aung San Suu Kyi's Possible Release Will Not Impact Burma

Burma's police chief says that if detained democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi were to be released from house arrest, it would likely have little effect on the country's political stability.

Major General Khin Yi told a conference of regional police officials in Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur, that support for the Nobel Peace Prize Laureate has fallen. He said there would not be rallies and riots in Burma if she was released from house arrest.

His comments come just days after Aung San Suu Kyi met with senior United Nations official Ibrahim Gambari in Rangoon.

The hour-long visit was the first in more than two years by a high-level UN representative.

Following the meeting, Gambari said the opposition leader was in good health, but added there was no indication that Aung San Suu Kyi might be released.

Burma's military leadership crushed a pro-democracy movement in 1988, and refused to recognize election results after a landslide victory by the Natonal League for Democracy in 1990.

Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of the NLD, has spent 10 of the past 16 years in detention, mostly under house arrest.
