Burma, Thailand Set To Sign New Timber Trading Deal

Burma and Thailand are expected to sign a timber trading deal that Burmese leaders hope will curb the economic and environmental losses caused by illegal logging in the country.

The timber trade agreement was discussed during a visit earlier this week by Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Bangkok Post reports Friday that talks will be held next week with Thai organizations and private companies to determine the annual timber demand and the types of wood needed.

The report says the deal to import Burmese timber to Thailand could be signed as early as next week.
