Human Rights Defender Su Su Nway Receives John Humphrey Freedom Award

A Canadian rights group has awarded its annual freedom prize to a Burmese political activist known for fighting forced labor.

The group, called Rights and Democracy, announced Wednesday that Su Su Nway is the winner of its John Humphrey Freedom Award and a 20,000 dollar cash prize.

It said Su Su Nway's struggle for human rights and dignity has made her a symbol of courage to the people of Burma.

Su Su Nway won an unprecedented victory in Burmese courts last year against village officials after she and her neighbors were forced to repair a road without pay.

She was arrested shortly after her legal victory for allegedly threatening and swearing at authorities and served nine months in prison. She told reporters after her release that she was not happy about returning home because forced labor still exists in
Burma.

Rights and Democracy said Su Su Nway represents a selfless commitment to justice and her accomplishment is a tribute to the human spirit.
