Burma Jails Democratic Activist for Petition Drive

A Burmese pro-democracy group says Burma has sentenced an activist to three years in prison for leading a petition drive calling for the release of Burmese political prisoners.

The media organization Democratic Voice of Burma reports that National League of Democracy member Win Ko was sentenced this week after being arrested October 6th.

It reports he had solicited signatures from his entire village of Yethabya and was attempting to deliver them to Rangoon when he was arrested.

The 88 Generation Students group says Win Ko was barred from seeing his family and denied access to a lawyer after his arrest.
