Nobel Peace Prize Winner Calls Poverty Threat to World Peace

Nobel Peace Prize winner Muhammad Yunus has urged world leaders to fight poverty, calling it a threat to international peace.

Accepting the prestigious award in Oslo today, Yunus said the frustrations, hostility and anger generated by abject poverty cannot sustain peace in any society.

The Nobel Peace Prize winner also said terrorism cannot be defeated by military action. He said spending money and resources on improving the lives of the poor is a better strategy to achieve lasting peace than spending that money on weapons.

The Nobel committee named the economist from Bangladesh and his Grameen Bank the winner of this year's peace prize. Yunus founded the bank 30 years ago to provide small loans called micro-credit to the poor at little or no interest.
