Burmese Democracy Leader Aung San Suu Kyi Honored in India

The Netaji Subhas Foundation in India has honored Burmese opposition leader and Nobel Peace laureate Aung San Suu Kyi with an award for what it says is her tireless struggle to restore democracy in Burma.

The foundation recognized Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday at a ceremony in Kolkata. Aung San Suu Kyi's representative Ramjeet Verma received the award and a cash prize on behalf of the Nobel laureate, who was not present as she has been under house arrest in Rangoon for most of the past 17 years.

The foundation said in a statement that with the award, it wants to send a strong message that the Indian people stand behind democratic movements in Burma.
