Russia to Build Nuclear Reactor in Burma

The Russian agency, Rosatom, said Tuesday that the International Atomic Energy Agency will operate a nuclear research center in Burma and that the reactor will be a part of the center.

Russia and China have become major suppliers of arms to Burma since the West imposed sanctions in 1988 over Burma's poor human rights record.

Earlier this year, United Nations Security Council members Russia and China voted down a U.S. draft resolution criticizing Burma's government and urging reforms.

The United States, the European Union, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, of which Burma is a member, have all criticized Burma's military government for serious human rights violations.
