VOA Burmese interviewed Khin Oo, a Burmese student from a women's college in Virginia, about her recent presentation of a research paper on Economic Development in Burma.
She based her paper on Nobel Laureate Dr. Amartya Sen's economic development theory. She and Dr. Sen believe that if there is no economic or personal freedom there won't be any kind of sustainable economic development in Burma.
Her philosophy professor, Dr.Owen, joined the interview to comment on how the Chinese model of economic development allows for full trade and business opportunities parallel to human rights abuses; however, in Burma, the government encourages neither trade nor human rights.
Khin Oo's Asian Studies professor, Dr. Metraux, commented on education, social and environmental issues that are critical not only in Burma, but also in the region and around the globe.
