The January 5 Burma Focus program looks at Independence Day in Burma with commentary by Shan and Karen ethnic leaders.
The day marks the formation of the Union of Burma on January 4, 1948 after the Japanese were driven out during World War II. Previous to the Japanese, Burma was occupied by the British.
U Shwe Ohn, a Shan leader, told listeners about a little known fact on how the idea of the Union of Burma was born. However, KNU leader Saw Bo Mya told listeners how ethnic groups have been suffering all these years.
