Thailand Welcomes Cambodian Response to Anti-Thai Riots - 2003-01-31

Thailand says Cambodia has taken full responsibility for massive anti-Thai rioting in the Cambodian capital.

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra says he received a letter from Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen, offering to pay unconditional compensation to Bangkok for damage inflicted on the Thai embassy in Phnom Penh during Wednesday's rioting.

Mr. Thaksin said the letter was a good gesture, and may help relations between Thailand and Cambodia.

Thailand closed its border with Cambodia, downgraded relations and evacuated its nationals from Phnom Penh after hundreds of protesters ransacked and set fire to the Thai embassy and several Thai-owned businesses.

The violence was sparked by reports in the Cambodian media that a Thai actress said the historic Angkor Wat temple complex belongs to Thailand. The actress (Suwanna Konying) denied making the statement.

Information for this report is provided by AP, AFP and Reurters.
