Anti-drug Cooperation Is Top Agenda On Thai PM's Burma Visit - 2003-02-08

Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is scheduled to travel to Burma Sunday for talks on a host of sensitive issues, including anti-drug cooperation.

Mr. Thaksin is expected to seek a clear stance from Burma's military junta about expansion of the drug trade along the Thai-Burma border, in areas controlled by ethnic militia such as the United Wa State Army.

The prime minister's trip comes days after his government launched an all-out, three-month war on drugs, aiming to eradicate completely trade in illicit drugs in Thailand.

Also on the agenda during Mr. Thakson's two-day trip will be a wide range of problems, including the status of illegal migrant workers, economic relations, insurgencies and refugees.
