U.S. Lawmaker Criticizes Burmese Military Government's Campaign of Genocide - 2003-02-15

A U.S. congressman took to the floor of the House of Representatives last Wednesday to decry what he called a campaign of genocide by Burma's ruling junta.

Joseph Pitts, a Republican Congressman from the state of Pennsylvania, said he visited the Thai-Burma border in January and met with refugees, democracy activists, prisoner-of-conscience groups and others working to help the people of Burma.

Mr. Pitts said the international community" has failed to recognize that there is, under international legal definitions, a campaign of genocide against the ethnic minorities" by the ruling military dictatorship.

The Congressman called on the United States and the international community to do something to assist the people of Burma and stop the brutality.
