Banking Crisis In Burma Examined - 2003-02-25

U Zaw Oo, an exiled economic analyst, told VOA that Burma’s current crisis is similar to the one in Thailand 5 years ago. Thailand's crises was caused by loan defaults and a lack of confidence in the government and central banks.

U Bernard Pe Win, a businessman in Rangoon, said the that crisis will not last long because the banks are under proper regulation of the Central Bank and there are sufficient funds to meet the withdrawals.

Dr. Myo Nyunt, an economist with Edith Cowen University, Perth, Australia, said the situation is to be expected because the whole economic system is a mess, suspecting that the banks are involved in drug money laundering.
