Domestic Violence in Burma - 2003-03-10

VOA Burmese staff interviewed a spectrum of figures in the Burma diaspora about a Rangoon court’s decision to jail Burmese democracy figure Aung San Suu Kyi for one week or to impose a fine in lieu of a jail sentence.

The Nobel Laureate had charges brought against her after she barred her cousin from entering her compound. Last May, her cousin punched Aung San Suu Kyi in the face over an argument.

Staffer Hla Hla Than’s interviewed a legal scholar at Cambridge University regarding domestic violence and how the legal system in Burma generally does not protect the people but instead work in favor of those in power.
