10 Burmese Pro-democracy Activists Get Prison Terms - 2003-05-26

Members of Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy are complaining of harassment, amid reports that Burmese military authorities have sentenced 10 pro-democracy activists to prison.

Media in the region said the 10 were sentenced last week to prison terms ranging from two years to life, reportedly for anti-government activities.

Meanwhile Sunday, hundreds of opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's supporters fled Sunday when a group supporting the military government threatened to run over them with cars.

A spokesman for the NLD said (Monday) the supporters were waiting for the Nobel Peace laureate to arrive at a roadside stop near Mandalay when members of the pro-government Union Solidarity Development Association packed vehicles with people and shouted at the bystanders to run for their lives.

Aung San Suu Kyi and her NLD have complained of increasing harassment from the military government.
