Pressure To Withdraw From Burma Irritates British Tobacco Company - 2003-07-31

British American Tobacco says it will not be forced by Britain and human rights groups to decide whether to shut down its cigarette factory in Burma.

Company chairman Martin Broughton said it is up to the British government, not his company, to decide whether British American Tobacco should continue to operate in Burma.

Mr. Broughton met with British officials earlier this month, who called on him to pull out of Burma to protest the country's human rights record.
