Bush in Singapore for Trade, Anti-Terror Talks - 2003-10-21

President Bush is in Singapore where he met with the country's leaders for talks on fighting terrorism and improving trade. The visit follows an Asian-Pacific economic forum in Thailand.

After a courtesy call on Singapore's president, Mr. Bush met with Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong for talks on fighting terrorism in South-East Asia.

Mr. Goh says they discussed the need to keep World Trade Organization negotiations going, as well as efforts to fight terrorism, because he says terrorism affects free trade.

Mr. Bush thanked the prime minister for his hospitality, calling him a wise man whose good advice he appreciates. He says they discussed ways to foster a common agenda of peace, freedom, and prosperity.

The president and First Lady spend the night in Singapore before leaving for Bali, where Mr. Bush will have lunch with Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri and meet with moderate Muslin leaders.

The three-hour stop in Bali will see tight security, following last year's bombing of discos that killed more than 200 people.
