Bush Welcomed by Queen on Britain Visit - 2003-11-19

Queen Elizabeth has formally welcomed President Bush to Great Britain - launching his state visit with pomp and ceremony in the courtyard of Buckingham Palace.

The president was welcomed with music, a 41-gun salute, and a parade of British troops in ceremonial dress.

Mr. Bush watched the pageantry with the queen and other dignitaries, and then reviewed the troops with Prince Philip. Together they walked past guards in their tall fur hats and grey coats, and looked on as soldiers on horseback rode by.

While the president was seen exchanging words with the queen, there were no formal remarks.

The keynote address of the trip is scheduled for later in the day, in which the president is expected to answer those who question the use of force in Iraq.

Tens-of-thousands of opponents of the war have congregated in London to protest the president's visit. A few were heard, but not seen by those present on the Buckingham Palace grounds.
