NCGUB Perspectives On KNU Peace Mission To Burma - 2004-01-19

VOA Burmese Service interviewed Dr. Sann Aung, who is a minister of the exiled National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma on the peace negotiation mission of the Vice President of the ethnic Karen National Union.

He welcomes the mission saying that the NLD and the ethnic armed groups always prefer negotiations over fighting. He is not worried about the pro-democracy groups being left behind if and when the KNU inks a peace agreement or a ceasefire agreement with the Military Government of Burma.

He says that the Military Government is trying to woo the KNU to the National Convention because the new National Convention is not recognized by any group or party in the country.

He does not think that the Military Government invites the KNU just because it has good intentions. He says it is because the current situation forced the Military Government to do it.

Dr. Sann Aung is not even worried that there would be an agreement between the KNU and the Military Government because he says it would create pressure on the Military to negotiate with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the other parties including the NLD.
