Burmese Junta Blames US Sanctions Over Human Trafficking - 2004-06-17

Burma has taken issue with a recent U.S. report that criticized Rangoon for not doing enough to eliminate human trafficking.

In a statement, Burma's military government accused the United States of aggravating the problem by imposing sanctions on developing countries, creating conditions where human traffickers can prey on women and children.

A U.S. State Department report says the Burmese government is involved in trafficking for forced labor, and says some children have reportedly been forced to enlist in the Burmese army.

Information for this report is provided by AFP.
