Celebrations in Burma for Aung San Suu Kyi's Birthday - 2004-06-19

Hundreds of pro-democracy supporters gathered today (Saturday) in Rangoon, to mark Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi's 59th birthday.

More than 400 members of the Nobel Peace Prize winner's National League for Democracy took part in a low-key ceremony at dawn in the capital, at their party headquarters.

NLD secretary U Lwin called for the release of Aung San Suu Kyi and all political prisoners in Burma, including the opposition party's deputy chairman, Tin Oo.

Aung San Suu Kyi, currently held under house arrest, has been detained since May of 2003, following a clash (in northern Burma) between her supporters and a pro-government mob. On Friday, Burma's military rulers released six more of those arrested last year, leaving only Aung San Suu Kyi and Tin Oo under detention.

U.S. officials have expressed regret that Aung San Suu Kyi must spend another birthday unable to travel freely in her country.
