Ireland Calls Off Ambassador Exchange With Burma - 2004-10-07

Ireland has delayed plans to exchange ambassadors with Burma due to the lack of political progress in the Southeast Asian country.

Irish Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern says Dublin is upset that Burma's military government continues to keep pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest.

Mr. Ahern also condemned Burma for persistent human rights abuses and the lack of basic freedoms in the country.

Ireland established diplomatic relations with Burma's military government in February, and Ireland's ambassador to Malaysia had been scheduled to be accredited in Burma on a non-resident basis.
