Indonesia Losing Hope That Aung San Suu Kyi Will Be Freed - 2004-10-20

Indonesia says the ouster of Burma's prime minister further reduces the chance of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi being freed from house arrest anytime soon.

Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda told reporters Wednesday that Jakarta now has much less hope that the Nobel peace laureate will be released.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been under house arrest for much of the past 15 years, most recently for more than a year following a clash in May 2003 between her supporters and a mob loyal to Burma's military government.
