Iraqi Official says Insurgents Behind Massacre may have had Inside Help - 2004-10-25

An Iraqi official says the massacre of nearly 50 U.S.-trained Iraqi army recruits near the Iranian border may have been set up by insurgent infiltrators within their ranks.

The Deputy Governor of Diyala province (Aqil Hamid al-Adili) told al-Arabiya television that is the only way the gunmen could have known when the troops were departing the military base near Baquba.

He also said the attackers apparently knew the recruits were unarmed as they traveled in vans to their homes in the south late Saturday.

In other developments, at least 11 Iraqi civilians and a U.S. soldier were killed today (Monday) in insurgent attacks in the Iraqi capital and several other urban centers.

A roadside bomb blast in Baghdad killed a U.S. soldier and wounded five bystanders. Three Iraqi civilians were killed and eight others were wounded in a car bomb attack near the Australian embassy.

In Mosul, two car bomb explosions killed at least three people. At least three other Iraqis were killed in fighting in Ramadi.

Information for this report is provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
