Karen National Union on Burma Politics - 2004-11-11

The recent leadership change in Rangoon resulted in a volatile political and economic situation with the people of Burma hurting the most.

That is what the Karen National Union General Secretary Phado Mahn Shah told VOA Burmese Service in an interview along the Thai-Burma border.

The KNU official said that the abruptly ended informal talks between the military government and his group in Rangoon late October was no help either in terms of speedy implemention of a lasting cease-fire and national reconciliation process.

He, however, emphasized that the only painless way to achieve that would be to begin a tri-partite dialogue involving the ruling military, the National League for Democracy and the ethnic groups both inside and outside the country.

Phado Mahn Shah expressed his hope that some positive developments would follow in due course, for the larger good of Burma.
