Powell, Israeli FM To Discuss Mideast Peace Prospects - 2004-11-15

Israel's foreign minister meets with U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell Monday to discuss prospects of renewing the stalled Middle East peace process.

Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom is in Washington for talks on how to move forward after the death of longtime Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

A Palestinian official says next week Mr. Powell will visit the West Bank to meet with the new Palestinian leadership. The State Department has yet to confirm that meeting.

On Sunday, Mr. Arafat's successor as head of the Palestine Liberation Organization was unharmed after militants opened fire inside a mourning tent for Mr. Arafat in Gaza City.

Mahmud Abbas and other Palestinian officials say the incident was not an assassination attempt.

Mr. Abbas is a contender to succeed Mr. Arafat in presidential elections set for January ninth.
