UN Envoy Works to Restart Democratic Reforms in Burma - 2004-11-29

The United Nations special envoy to Burma has met with the foreign minister of that country in hopes of returning there to help restart its stalled transition to democracy.

Malaysian diplomat Razali Ismail met Sunday with Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win in Laos on the eve of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations summit. Earlier in the day, Mr. Razali met with Thailand's foreign minister, Surakiart Sathirathai.

A senior Thai official told the Associated Press Mr. Razali is trying to figure out how to approach Burma's new leadership. Former Prime Minister Khin Nyunt was replaced in September.

Also Sunday, more than 40 ASEAN lawmakers meeting in Kuala Lumpur issued a non-binding statement saying Burma should be suspended from the group if it does not make better progress toward democracy.
