AHRC: Burma Punishes Rights Abuse Victims for Speaking Out - 2004-12-09

An international human rights group says Burma has punished victims of forced labor and other rights abuses for speaking out and lodging complaints.

The Hong Kong-based Asian Human Rights Commission says it has received several reports of Burmese villagers being detained for leading complaints against forced labor and other rights abuses.

The group says Burmese villagers are typically rejected if they speak out against officials for imposing manual work on them.

The rights group says any Burmese who try to defend their rights must deal with a country that, in its words, has "no rule of law" or an independent legal system to protect the Burmese people.
