Greek Bus Hijackers Release More Hostages - 2004-12-15

Two gunmen in Greece who seized a bus with more than 20 people on board have released three more hostages, bringing the total number set free to 10.

The bus was en route from Marathon, east of Athens, to the city center when it was hijacked early Wednesday. Shortly after the hijacking, the driver and ticket collector managed to escape along with one passenger.

Greek Prime Minister Kostas Karamanlis postponed by one day his departure for a key European Union Summit in Brussels because of the hijacking. A spokesman for the prime minister said Mr. Karamanlis expects to travel to Brussels Thursday morning.

Greek police, who surrounded the bus, have described the gunmen as foreigners. There have been conflicting reports about the nationalities of the men. Police will not confirm reports that the hijackers are demanding 1.3 million dollars in ransom.

Information for this report is provided by AP, AFP and Reuters.
