Group Calls on Burma to Expand Battle Against AIDS - 2004-12-18

An international advocacy group says Burma's military leaders must broaden their fight to halt the spread of HIV and AIDS.

The International Crisis Group says the military junta needs to enlist the help of grassroots and small non-governmental organizations throughout the country, especially in border areas where the rates of HIV and AIDS are "particularly intense."

The advocacy group says the international humanitarian response to Burma's HIV epidemic is helping the Burmese people create a social structure independent of the regime that could prepare them for an eventual transition to democracy.
