Reports: Tsunamis Kill at Least 90 in Burma - 2004-12-28

Tidal waves unleashed by Sunday's massive earthquake are reported to have killed at least 90 people in Burma.

International aid officials say at least 36 of the deaths were reported in the vast delta of the Ayeyarwaddy River, while another 20 people perished in the Tanintharyi Division along Burma's coastline.

Burma's military government rarely provides details of man-made or natural disasters. However, official reports place the death toll at 34 and Burmese television did report on government condolence messages to other affected countries.

The United Nations Children's Fund says it is willing to provide any assistance necessary, but has received no official request for relief efforts.

Meanwhile, a published report says at least 50 Burmese workers were killed by a tsunami in the Thai coastal city of Ranong.
