Press Freedom Group Welcomes Release of Burmese Journalists - 2005-01-07

A U.S. press freedom group has praised the release from prison of four Burmese journalists and called for seven others to be freed.

The PEN American Center says it welcomes the January 3rd release of poet and journalist Aung Myint, editor Ohn Kyaing, sports writer Zaw Thet Htwe, and journalist Thein Tan. The Center said Aung Myint was imprisoned for handing out press releases to reporters and Western diplomats shortly after democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi was arrested in May 2003.

Burma released the journalists among more than five thousand prisoners last week.

In its statement, the PEN American Center said at least seven other writers are still in detention, which it said violates their right to freedom of expression. It called for their unconditional and immediate release.
