AIDS Conference Closes with Call for Universal Access to Prevention

The sixteenth International AIDS Conference has come to an end with a call for universal access to AIDS prevention strategies and treatment.

On Friday in Toronto, conference co-chair Dr. Mark Wainberg, said the meeting would be a failure unless access to anti-retroviral drugs and prevention strategies are rapidly and dramatically scaled up.

Conference highlights included the release of research indicating that male circumcision may reduce by up to 60% the transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

A recent United Nations report said 25 million people have died from AIDS-related illnesses during the past 25 years. The report estimated 39 million people worldwide are living with H.V.

The next international AIDS conference will be held in Mexico City in 2008.
