This is a response from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs regarding the United Nations human Rights envoy’s untoward incident at the Insein Correctionl Facility.
This is the 5th trip to Myanmar by the Special Rapporteur Professor Paulo Sergio Pinheiro and there has always been excellent cooperation between the Myanmar authorities and the Special rapporteur. This has been duly acknowledged by the Human Rights Commission.
The untoward incident at Insein jail on 22 March was not sanctioned by the Government and a thorough investigation is being undertaken. Moreover, Myanmar authorities had explained the circumstances surrounding the matter and also conveyed their sincere regret to the special Rapporteur.
Although the Special Rapporteur left the country earlier than his scheduled date of departure, it is learnt that both sides would not like to see the existing co-operation to be greatly affected by this incident.
