Ukraine's Supreme Court, Parliament Working on Disputed Election - 2004-11-30

Ukraine's Supreme Court and parliament have met separately Tuesday to work on a solution to a national crisis set off by a disputed presidential run-off election held November 21st.

The court began its session on Monday to consider allegations of widespread voter fraud raised by Viktor Yushchenko -- the West-leaning opposition presidential candidate. He has called for a new election. There is no indication when the court might make a ruling.

Pro-Moscow Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych now says he would agree to a new election, but only if neither he nor Mr. Yushchenko are candidates.

Ukraine's parliament has adjourned for the day, without a vote on a no-confidence motion against the prime minister's government. Debate is expected to continue tomorrow. Lawmakers also were discussing calls for autonomy in Mr. Yanukovych's native eastern region.
