Spain Honors Victims on Anniversary of Terrorist Bombing

Spain observed five minutes of silence Friday to mark the one-year anniversary of the Madrid train bombings which killed 191 people.

The entire country, including all commuter trains, came to a standstill at noon local time (1100 UTC) to honor the victims of the terrorist attack.

U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan and Morocco's King Mohamed also joined Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero in the silent tribute.

Earlier, church bells rang out (at 7:37 am local time) to mark the exact moment the first blast ripped apart a commuter train one year ago.

The 10 coordinated bombings on four trains produced the worst death toll ever from terrorism in Spain. Islamic militants, predominantly from Morocco and sympathetic to al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Information for this report is provided by AP and AFP.
