UN special envoy says Terje Roed-Larsen Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has committed himself to a full withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon.
The announcement was made today (Saturday) in a statement after Mr. Roed-Larsen met Mr. Assad in the northern Syrian town of Aleppo to press for a timetable for a pullout.
The statement says Mr. Roed-Larsen will present UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan with a timetable next week for a complete Syrian pullout from Lebanon.
The meeting came after a large convoy of Syrian forces returned home today from positions in northern Lebanon. However, thousands of Syrian troops are still located elsewhere in the country.
