Party officials say Nai Htin passed away Monday in the Mon state capital city of Moulmein in southern Burma. He was recently hospitalized for a bout of malaria.
Nai Htin was chosen as leader of the Mon ethnic group in 2003 after the death of chairman Naing Shwe Kyin.
The party signed a cease-fire deal with the ruling military junta in 1995 with the intention of holding political dialogues.
